Does your teenager not follow though with your requests, not complete tasks or not follow though with general rules and standards of conduct that they used to adhere to? If so, your teenager is demonstrating some level of defiance. Defiance can mean noncompliance (not doing what is asked or following expectations) or resistance (blatantly challenging or opposing rules or expectations). In the moment resistance can feel much worse, however, over time both can be extremely frustrating and worrisome. One of the questions I have been asked repeatedly by parents of teenagers is whether their teenager's behavior is "typical teenage behavior" or a real problem. This is a question that keeps parents up at...

All children, at some time or another, exhibit behaviors that are concerning to their parents, such as not listening, inattentiveness, or having trouble in school. For many children, these are temporary problems. For some children, these behaviors are signs of a larger problem requiring treatment by a mental health professional. Parents need to know when behavior is not "just a phase" and requires treatment. Below are some common disorders in children and behavior parents may see. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is a common disorder in children, and involves difficulty paying attention and impulsive behavior. I met Tammy when I was substitute teaching. Tammy was twelve years old, nonverbal, without any viable communication system; she did not talk, sign, select, or point to desired pictures or objects and appeared unable to discriminate. Tammy refused to participate in activities. She resisted assistance. She was angry, shut down. Tammy had been in the school for years and her progress was abysmal. Staffers reported that they had never heard Tammy talk; however, they told me her mother reported that she talked at home on occasion. Tammy was extremely stubborn--stiff as a board--eyes closed with hands tightly gripped over them. Since she was unable to see where she was going, staffers led her...

Children have been defiant probably since the birth of the first child on earth. As aggravating as a defiant child can be for parents, defiant behavior in children is a natural part of growing up. Deciding how to deal with defiant behavior is a very personal matter for parents. Although tradition and mass opinion often determines how a parent will react to a situation, choosing to focus your parenting actions based on the long-term goals you wish for your child rather than tradition or mass opinion can strengthen the lifelong character, morals and values that your child holds. "Opposition Defiance Disorder", more properly called "Oppositional Defiant Disorder", and abbreviated "ODD", is a serious disorder in pre-adolescent or adolescent children, and sometimes even in pre-schoolers. All children, of any age, are oppositional and defiant from time to time, so it's really a matter of degree. A diagnosis of ODD is made when the child shows many of the behaviors listed below, when they are extreme, consistent, and ongoing, and when they interfere with social relationships, school adjustment and learning. 1. Raging, losing temper 2. Actively defying requests 3. Refusing to follow rules 4. Blaming other people for his or her own mistakes and misbehavior 5. Harsh language and...

Having a child is an incredibly exciting thing. Before your child was born, you probably spent so many hours thinking about what he or she would look like, picking out names, and thinking about all fun experiences you'd share. But then your child was born, and things may not have been exactly as you hoped - he or she acts out more than you expected. It seems that your child has a very defiant attitude. Many parents have trouble dealing with a defiant child because they have a hard time realizing that he or she isn't the perfect angel they imagined. They may have expected great behavior and manners, but were taken by surprise when their child misbehaved frequently. The first thing that parents need...

Why the Increase in Single Parents? There are many factors that have contributed to the rise in the number of single parents throughout the US. The increasing numbers of divorces due to domestic violence or abuse of a substance are one such factor. After a divorce there is a greater chance of one parent deciding to have little or no contact with their children in order to start a new life. With the divorce rate rising over 50 percent, this contributes to the growing number of solo parents each year. Deaths, imprisonment, and a dramatic increase in the amount of children born out of wedlock also contribute to the high number of individuals raising children on their own. One of the greatest gifts you as a parent can give your child or teen is the ability to handle their emotions. Said another way, teaching children how to identify, reflect on, and deal with their feelings by the time they leave home is one of the best ways to prepare them for adulthood. In fact, it is my opinion that emotional strength and ability will take a person much farther in life than intellectual ability or a specific ability (like athletic or artistic ability). So what does it mean to identify and handle feelings? Well, to identify feelings simply means to name them accurately. To handle feelings means to sit with them and be able to tolerate the intensity of them. But how is it that...

Expectations of children are tricky for parents. Expect too much of children and they may become discouraged as they know they can't deliver on your expectations. Expect too little and they may well meet your expectations and deliver very little. The key is to keep your expectations just ahead of your children's capabilities. Let's explore this notion of expecatrions. Parents frequently ask me when they should begin to develop independence in children. My response rarely varies - we develop independence from the earliest possible age. Children and young people tend to have certain role models - people they aspire to be like when they are older. Whereas traditionally children would have wished to emulate their mother, father or a favourite relative or local character, increasingly these role models are thought of as celebrities and sports people. Opinion varies as to whether pop stars and other celebrities are a good example to children. It is fair enough to say that it completely depends who the particular person in question is. Glamour models, such as Jordan (Katie Price) are often admired and looked up to by young girls, often much to the despair of parents and teachers, who wish to encourage the concept that success is...

It seems that many don't have the skills required while others seem to think that they would rather be a friend than a parent for the child. A "good parent" is one who does everything possible to meet the needs and the wants of the child even if it is not in the child's best interest. This person tends to let the "tail wag the dog". Curfews, rules and responsibilities are non-existent or inconsistent. The child thinks s/he has a "good parent" because that person allows the child to be in charge. Why Teach Kids About God?

There is nothing as fragile as a child's psyche. Child psychologists will tell anyone that the most formative years are those from birth to about sever years old. While some may be of the opinion that children should not be exposed to "religion" during their formative years, there is enough proof that those who are brought up with a sense of right and wrong during their early years become better and more well adjusted adults. We are no talking of religion "per se" here. Teaching children about God at their earliest age -- if done the right way -- brings out more confident, behaved, well adjusted and loving kids. Yes, there are those who feel that teaching about "hell" and the "devil" to kids may be...

"Why did my daddy leave? Was it because I was a bad girl or he didn't love us anymore?" Explaining the absent parent is never easy, but it is necessary. For children, their primary fear is of abandonment and loss of parental love. There may be a number of reasons that the family is no longer intact, if it ever was, but the child is looking for reassurance that it is not their fault and that they will be cared for. Children's lives revolve around their family: The family unit is all they have ever known and to hear that a parent or caregiver is no longer going to be there is very traumatic and almost unbelievable. They will jump to a number of conclusions, most of them wrong and blaming themselves...

A Parenting Myth - Are Timeouts Effective?

Most child raising books and internet sites still promote time-outs as an effective discipline tool because it 'gives your child an opportunity to learn to cope with frustration and modify his behavior. This sounds good in theory but, as most parents find out, this is a very ineffective technique for most people. Why don't timeouts work? 1) It requires parents to delay discipline until the child is old enough to accept time-outs which is at about 3 years old. So that is a crucial 2 years of training that is missed when parents can establish their authority. 2) Parents run the risk of looking ineffectual and foolish when the toddler runs away or wiggles or screams or sits when you said stand or vice...

Eating a nutritionally-balanced diet is good advice for children as well as adults. In fact, teaching children to make the right food choices is one of the best tools you can arm them with. Adoptive Family Identity Formation

5 stars of 5, 626 votes

Adoptive Family Identity Formation can be defined as the way in which the family system transforms emotionally, spiritually, and physically from its pre-adoptive state to one that embraces and reflects the recently placed child. This transformation has to occur not only the first time a family adopts, but each time a child arrives. After all, each child brings new energy, new challenges, new expectations, new hopes, and new ideas; and, the family has to change as it integrates these into the overall system. If the members of the family system don't make the shift to include the new child, then the child will be stuck in the outer limits of the family, never really belonging. And, if the family...
